Why Simplicity is King: A Blog Redesign

July 15, 2010

As you may have noticed (RSS subscribers may want to click through), I’ve recently redesigned my blog to emphasize the content. By that, I mean that I’ve totally done away with anything other than the plain-text posts.

Here’s why: creating complex and beautiful posts with individual formatting and stunning images—while cool—was just way too much work. It generally takes me about ten minutes to write a short post and a half hour for a longer one, but by forcing myself to find and edit images (sometimes more than one), I easily doubled my workload.

So instead, I decided to do away with all of that and make this site simpler. Virtually everything but the bare essentials is gone, including all sorts of fancy share buttons and tweet trackers and whatnot. Additionally, in a gross misuse of custom post types, I plan to emphasize links a lot more. I think this will keep my content fresh and, honestly, encourage me to use my blog significantly more.

I’m pretty sure I’ve worked out all the kinks, but let me know if you find anything I’ve missed (or if you like the look, which is preferred).

This is a good time to encourage you to subscribe if you haven’t already. Regular posting will resume (begin?) tomorrow. Be excited.

P.S. Quick shout out to a friend of mine who designed the logo you see above. Check out his work: DividedGraphics.
