Why Half Isn’t Good Enough
November 19, 2009
I’ve been reading 2 Chronicles in my excursion through the Bible in three months (and yes, the three months is over and I’m only in 2 Chronicles), and something in 25:1-2 stood out to me the other day. Let’s read it together, shall we.
Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem…He did right in the sight of the LORD, yet not with a whole heart.
Not with a whole heart. The first thought that comes to mind when I read this: “Oh crap.” It’s pretty darn easy to do the right stuff without a whole heart.
Where do you see yourself doing good things with good intentions but without a heart committed wholly to God?

I find myself already coming up with an excuse – but there are too many things to be good at, that there has to be a balance – in my duties as a Christian, a husband, a father, a worker and a friend.
But maybe it’s about my attitude in each aspect of my responsibilities.
Hmmm, definitely food for thought.

Yeah I see it that way, too. Like…I'll never be perfect in every area. My first thought is that it's a process, so I don't have to be perfect right away. Second, and more significantly, I don't think it's really about doing everything perfect so much as having a heart that's fully devoted to God. That is, although I'm not very good at most of the things that I'm supposed to be doing, if I'm pursuing God, it's ok. Thoughts?
