The Ultimate Guide to Facebook Privacy Settings

2. Profile Settings

You will here make use of your new friend lists. Click first the Settings —> Privacy Settings page. Once there, select “Profile” to begin. With these options you will designate who can see various information on your Profile page and how much they can see.

Facebook Privacy Settings Guide 04The various settings for both “Basic Settings” and “Contact Information” are fairly straightforward, but if you are unsure of the meaning of any setting you can click the question mark (“?”) for more information. To customize who can see the different parts of your profile, simply select your choice in the drop-down menu. The majority of my preferences have been set to “Only Friends,” but you can choose whatever most fits your needs (including the recently added “Everyone” option).

Facebook Privacy Settings Guide 05Additionally, to make use of your friend lists, select the more powerful “Customize…” option. A small window will pop up in which you can apply more specific settings. To include only certain friends, select the “Some Friends” option and type the names of the desired friends or friend lists. To exclude only certain friends, select the “Only Friends” option and, in the “Except These People” section, type the names of the friends or friend lists which you wish to exclude. Once you have finished, click “Okay” and repeat the process with the remainder of these options. Click “Save Changes” to apply your settings.

Facebook Privacy Settings Guide 06Another powerful feature is the “See how a friend sees your profile” ability. With this, you are able to visualize the effects of your customization on various friends. I have used this feature heavily in my own customization. Check out how a couple friends from different friend lists see your profile, and make certain that you have properly chosen your desired settings. Again, click “Save Changes” once you have finished all customization.
