MacSword: Free Bible Software for Macs

September 22, 2009

I’ve been looking forward to promoting this application for a while. I’ve been using MacSword for a few months, and it’s become one of my favorite little utilities. MacSword is a free and open source Bible application for Macs, similar to the popular E-Sword for Windows. It’s a simple application with a simple purpose, but it’s powerful enough to provide significant value.

MacSword thrives on its expandability. After installing the application, a user can run the Installer Module to add any of the hundreds of Bible translations or related material that are provided by the Sword Project. MacSword offers tons of free resources including commentaries, dictionaries, lexicons, and even classic Christian literature (Josephus, anyone?).

This strong offering of outside resources is the main draw to most Bible software, including giants like Logos or BibleWorks. MacSword therefore stands out: it offers great content at the low price of free. To be fair, MacSword isn’t NEARLY as robust as these other applications; however, it meets the basic needs of 95% of the market. Give it a shot, then tell me what you think.

Update: Since the original time of writing of this post, MacSword has released a significant update which serves to make it even more competitive with some of the more expensive Bible software out there. Check it out!
