iPhone 2.0 and App Store – Free Apps Galore!

Friday, July 11th, 2008

iPhone 2.0I’m really excited about the iPhone 2.0 update as well as all of the apps that come along with it. Yesterday I downloaded 52 apps before the software was even released to run them on the phone. Some really cool applications have been developed and I’m excited to try them out. I think the thing I am most happy about with this new service is the free applications. There are so many! Apple did a fantastic job setting up a mechanism for developers to create appications and release them for free. My favorite part about the new App Store is the “All Free Applications” button. I’m very glad that Apple decided it would be a good idea to put all of the free applications in one place for those of us who don’t care to spend exorbitant amounts of money to play Texas Hold’em on our cell phones. Once again, Apple provided almost exactly what its customers wanted. Good job with the new stuff, Apple.

N.T. Wright Holds His Own Against Colbert

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

This may not be interesting to many of you who may not be familiar with N.T. Wright, but those who are will hopefully enjoy this as I did. Wright, everyone’s favorite Anglican bishop (Desmond Tutu is an archbishop) and author of the recent Surprised By Hope (which I read and found to be very, very good), was recently interviewed on The Colbert Report. I was surprised while watching it as to how well he held his own. In fact, he even cracked a couple of jokes from time to time! Wright managed to – I think – get across his point while not looking like a fool. Most surprising to me, though, was that Stephen Colbert seemed mildly interested and somewhat familiar with the topic. So check out the video – I definitely recommend it.

Wanna Use Evernote?

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

I previously discussed Evernote, the online application that allows you to archive everything. I just realized that I have a number of invites left to give out. If anyone is interested in an invite, let me know in the comments (and make sure to include your email address in the email field).

Oh, and I’m back from Guatemala. Eventually I may give some more details on the excitement of the trip. I just got back, though, and now I’m going to bed.

5k Run…

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

I haven’t posted in quite some time – but I wanted to ask about your experiences if you have run a 5k marathon. Its not really marathon, since those are 26 miles or something. My girlfriend convinced me to run an Independence Day 5k with her (for those of you who can’t figure it out, 5 kilometers/3.2 miles) I agreed this past Sunday. Unforunately I have not really ran since, o lets say three years ago. My intensive training program has been:

2 miles on Sunday (15 minutes)

2 miles on Monday (14 minutes)

rest Tuesday

3.0 on Wednesday (22 minutes)

2.0 tonight (shooting for 14)

I feel pretty good, I’m not tired or sore. This thing is at 8am tomorrow so we will see how that goes. I am shooting for 22 minutes, I will try to break 20 minutes. I am also pretty sure that it is going to rain so that will make it interesting. I have never done one of these and the last time I ran in a race was in high school. I will post how I did.

Zoomii – Judge a Book By Its Cover…Online!

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

A new way to browse books on Amazon has recently been developed. The creator of Zoomii, a tool for browsing books graphically online, had in mind the idea that Internet book-buyers are interested in simply browsing shelves of books looking for material that stands out. With this idea in mind, Chris Thiessen developed Zoomii. Zoomii was just made public on June 16th and already is receiving a lot of attention. The basic concept is that Zoomii shows images of books placed in their respective categories on bookshelves similar to what would be encountered in a traditional book store. All the data is pulled from Amazon and is apparently kept up-to-date. Perhaps my favorite aspect of Zoomii is that a unique URL is created each time a user scrolls, zooms in, or does anything else, making it easy to share your findings. It’s lacking some things, however, as it’s pretty unusable upon zooming out. As a whole, though, it’s pretty cool: check it out!
